Thickets and steep sunny slopes, full sun or partial shade, SE aspect, with Quercus garryana, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Prunus cerasifera. Brainerd's station; naturalized evergreen shrubs 2-4 m tall, 18-20 stamens, fruits orange to red-orange, shiny depressed-globose, 5-6.5 x 6.5-9.5 mm, seeds black, 2.6-4 x 1.8-2.1 mm; occasional.

Road cuts, dry hillsides and fencelines; Quercus garryana, Rubus bifrons, Avena, Daucus carota. Shrubs 1.5-6 m tall; fruits orange-red, ca. 8 mm diameter; leaf margins entire, leaf apex shallowly notched. Ca. 10 plants naturalizing on both sides of I-5. Planted as an ornamental at the county fairgrounds ca. 200 meters away.
