Growing in dense thicket in wetland near commercial cranberry bogs, originally established early in 20th century. Associated taxa: Rhamnus purshiana, Salix hookeriana, Gautheria shallon, Calamagrostis nutkaensis, Lonicera involucrata, Picea sitchensis, Malus fusca, Vaccinium macrocarpon. Leaves thick & shiny with black glands on upper-side midrib; fruits black, bitter, 7-9 mm long, clustered.
