Thickets in partial shade of slender row of Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, with Prunus virginiana, Symphoricarpos albus, Crataegus okanaganensis, C. macracantha. Shrubs 4 meters tall, leaves dull green, turning orange-brown, thorns 21-42 millimeters, dry fruits 8-11 x 8-11 millimeters wide, reddish-black or blackish, 3-4 pyrenes, 10 stamens.
