Growing in dense thicket in wetland near commercial cranberry bogs, originally established early in 20th century. Growing with Rhamnus purshiana, Salix hookeriana, Gauntheria hallon, Calmagrostis nutkaensis, Lonicera involucrata, Picea sitchensis, Malus fusca in wetland historically farmed for cranberries, Vaccinium macrocarpon. Leaves thick and shiny with black glands on upper side midrib; turning bright red before dropping; fruits black, bitter, 7-9 millimeters long, clustered.
