Rocky Canyons. California Maidenhair Fern; The scientific name is from the Greek meaning not to moisten; The leaves resist water or are always so smooth it runs off from them. The northwest Indians used the thin leaves of maiden hair fern in drying berries. Over a fire they laced a lattice of cedar strips. Leaves of fern were strewn on the strips then the berries were spread on the fern. The dried fern leaves were winnowed out of the dried berries.
