Top of knoll and west-southwest facing slopes of ridge on volcanic bedrock and rock rubble. Cushion plant-bunchgrass community on windward side of ridge (taller and denser meadow community on leeward side). Rock cover 60-75%, veg cover 30-40%, bare soil <10%. Cushion plant community dominated by Draba densifolia, Phlox solivaga, Astragalus whitneyi, Eremogone congesta, Sedum stenopetalum, and Poa secunda. Plants loosely matted, forming tufts 5-30 inches across. In late flower and fruit or vegetative. Herbage gray green, covered with short, woolly hairs. Locally common, but just on rocky, wind-facing surfaces. Can provide up to 30% cover. With Phlox multiflora, Monardella odoratissima, Phoenicaulis cheiranthoides. Phenology: Flowers and Fruits.
