Gently sloping, mesic subalpine meadow with scattered small Pinus albicaulis, Picea engelmannii, scattered boulders, and low, lawn-like cover of perennial herbs including Antennaria, Potentilla, Fragaria, Symphyotrichum, Achillea, Carex, and Danthinia, grading into wet meadows below. Plants light green to yellow-green, lightly glaucous; pinnae mostly cupped towards sporophore with tip of trophophore prow-shaped, margins smooth to finely crenulate; common stalk short on some plants, to 2 cm and well above ground on others; plants common in band at lower margin of meadow among Antennaria, with B. pinnatum, B. paradoxum, B. lunaria. Moist meadow with Salix thickets, Antennaria, Caltha, Erigeron, Carex, and grasses. Plants slightly glaucous; pinnae highly fused, the lower pinnae shallowly bilobed; common stalk 0.5-1 cm above-ground; plants scattered in patches here and farther downstream by road, growing mixed with B. simplex var. compositum. Phenology: Spores.
