Sandy roadside, with Melilotus albus. Abundant weed, 1000+ plants over 100+ m along the road, but only in a few parts of town; lower leaves red, newer growth green, stems always curving toward the top so that the developing inflorescence is at a 30-50 degree angle in most cases; mostly single-stemmed plants, but robust ones with ascending shoots arising near the stem base; not yet in flower bud, but old fruit stalks are strictly erect; plants with only short curved hairs and long rather appressed hairs; pustular-based and glandular hairs absent.

Along railroad tracks, with Linaria dalmatica, Centaurea stoebe ssp. micranthos. 17 plants over 40 m stretch; stem tops leaning sideways in flower bud; calyx and all parts virtually devoid of glandular or pustular-based hairs, mostly just short and long strigose hairs.

Blacktop cracks of old pavement and sandy gravel of vacant lot. Whole plant with curved short strigulose or long appressed hairs, not really any other hairs; growing with Oenothera biennis, but flowering later; first flowers barely strarting to open; population = 100+.
