Growing next to road and extending back and down a gentle slope; growing in open, mixed coniferous-broadleaf forest on rocky clay-based soil with shale; associated species include Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Quercus kelloggii, Lithocarpus densiflorus, Arctostaphylos canescens, Apocynum sp., Toxicodendron diversilobum, Vicia sp., Whipplea modesta, Iris innominata and Lathyrus sp. Rhizomatous perennial; leaves green with a touch of blue; flowers golden yellow, 80% in bloom, 20% in bud; stems with purple tinge.
