On former site of mixed conifer forest, forest cover killed by 2002 Biscuit Fire with shrub layer regenerating; associated species include Rhododendron macrophyllum, Quercus sadleriana, Arbutus mensiesii, Berberis nervosa, Gaultheria shallon, Arctostaphylos patula, Pteridium aquilinum, Rubus ursinus, Rosa gymnocarpa, Rubus parviflorus, and Trientalis latifolius; vernally moist swale on northeast facing slope with well drained soils derived from granite. Locally abundant; low growing, rhizomatous shrub to 1 m; collection type: seed, cuttings, division, voucher.
