Gravelly or dry hillsides. [Gray or hoary manzanita]; A shrub 4 to 9 ft.; Blooms in February and March; Leaves are evergreen, tough and leathery. The branches are hard, very polished and crooked, making them useful for decorative purposes, such as ming trees. The unripe berries are used for jelly. When ripe, though edible, they are quite tasteless. The Indians make a form of cider of the berries. Manzanita is from the Spanish meaning little apples, referring to the berries. Its Latin name is from the Greek meaning bear and grape [ref to species uva-ursi]. Berries are a favorite food of the bears. Phenology: flowering.
