Carex aquatilis meadows in marly soil with Kobresia simpliciuscula and Triglochin palustris. Both Carex marina and C. tenuiflora (and C. heleonastes) have short, crowded inflorescences and I’d separate them from by the following characters: Pistillate scales white-hyaline except for green center; perigynium beaks green to pale brown, the same color as the body……C. tenuiflora. Pistillate scales reddish brown with a paler center; perigynium beaks reddish brown tinged with a hyaline apical rim, darker than the perigynium body: Perigynium tapering to a more or less clearly defined (though short) dark beak with a clear hyaline apical rim.….C. heleonastes Perigynium tapered to a blunt, essentially beakless apex, frequently dark to the very tip….C. marina Even in the sun, Carex tenuflora is pale and silvery. Carex marina and C. heleonastes can be hard to distinguish in the herbarium, the distinction in the beaks is subtle, and comparative (and it helps to look at a number of perigynia, because pressing can distort them), but with comparative material, is usually possible.
