Carex arctiformis Mack.

British Columbia: Greater Vancouver Regional District, Richmond, Lulu Island, one mile south of Fraser Avenue Bridge, near road.
Peat bog; amongst Ledum, Kalmia, Vaccinium, Eriophorum, Chemissonis and similar typical peat bog plants. These plants seem to agree pretty well with Mackenzie’s descriptions, though some spikes come rather close to ordinary Carex canescens in the spikes being somewhat moniliform, this character varying on the same plant. Both species were about equally abundant in the 100 square yards or so in which the specimens were gathered, but the species are quite distinct and can be picked out by the eye before one is close enough to distinguish the differences in the spikes. The arctaeformis plants have the herbage shorter, more abundant, more floppy and more glaucous; the culme are shorter and weaker, often almost lying on the herbage. #10, 854 was growing about 12 inches away from a typical Carex canescens while #10,851 was growing so close to one that leaves, culms and roots were intermingled, yet the two plants were quite easily distinguishable. Difference of environment could, therefore, not be a factor in the difference of these plants.
