About 40 plants naturalized on dry rocky slopes above and below railroad, full sun, over basalt, with Bromus tectorum, Amsinckia, Eriogonum, Sisymbrium, Secale cereale. Adventive plants 1-2 m wide pads avocado green unless stressed, then blue green; major spines 30-40 mm, dark red and gray, spreading to reflexed, 30-40 mm, bright dull yellow, all dull orange at base, anthers and filaments yellow, stigma green, style pale yellow.
