Growing in shallow very gravely clay soil derived from limestone on a sparsely vegetated windswept ridge. Associated with Pseudoroegneria spicata, Artemisia nova, Stenotus acaulis, Poa secunda, Eriogonum brevicaule, Phlox hoodii, Crepis modocensis, Castilleja chromosa, Astragalus purshii, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, and Cymopterus ibanpensis.
