Vegetated tidal shore, in moist mossy ground with Salix sessilifolia, S. prolixa, S. sitchensis, above high tide line in August; growing with Lotus pedunculatus, Lythrum salicaria, Iris pseudacorus, Juncus effusus var. effusus, Lycopus europaeus, Epilobium cilatum subsp. watsonii. Single clump 1.5 m tall with 4 flowering stems of equal height; stems not as hairy and leaves smoother than the rare native var. bruneri; introduced garden variety from eastern North America.
