forb-rich big sagebrush steppe. Kipuka: 40 acres of deep loamy soil, surrounded by lava flows (though the flows are old enough to be fairly heavily vegetated). 2-track and proximity to highway notwithstanding, this is exceptionally nice sagebrush steppe, with no sign of livestock grazing and relatively little cover of exotic plants.¶ This is the dominant understory species throughout large portions of this kipuka. ¶
