British Columbia: Fraser Valley, 10 km due west of Chilliwack, south shore of Fraser River, 1.5 km east of Sumas River mouth. Elev. 7 m

Moist alluvial woods dominated by mature Populus trichocarpa, with Prunus serotina, Sambucus racemosa, Rubus armeniacus, Symphoricarpos albus, with understory of Polystichum munitum, Athyrium filix-femina, moss. Loosely clumped stems 5 m tall with straight shoots and spreading branches with many flower clusters; sterile radiant flowers just starting to open on a few stems; first time noted as a wild plant in BC; garden escape from Asia; wild progenitor of the cultivated forma plicatum, the Japanese snowball; single mature shrub with a few separate(?) shoots near the main clump.

Moist alluvial woods dominated by mature Populus trichocarpa, with Sambucus racemosa, Cornus occidentalis, Crataegus suksdorfii. Arching spreading shrub from few erect shoots; sterile flowers still in bud; single shrub, but another one collected 300 m northwest; spread by birds and growing very well just like a native plant.
