Candelariella vitellina (Hoffm.) Müll. Arg.

Oregon: Wallowa County: Wallowa-Whitman National Forest: Eagle Cap Ranger District: Eagle Cap Wilderness (in part); three collection sites along 3 km of ridgetop from Mt. Howard Tramway to East Peak. Tramway is about 4300' n of the w boundary.
Treeless area of volcanic rock outcrops with sparse vegetation, most of surface area is rock, mineral soil, crustose lichens, bryophytes and alpine herbs. Dominant rock lichens were Lecanora sp., Umbilicaria sp., Lecidea atrobrunnea; also localized coverages of Acarospora, Caloplaca, Xanthoria, Rhizoplaca, Rhizocaropn, Lecidea tesselata. Lichen communities were similar at all 3 collection sites, but vagrant lichens found mostly at Site 1. Slopes and aspects of collection sites were variable, but lichens were best on north to east aspects. With Rhizoplaca melanophthalma and cryptic Lecidea sp. Substrate: Volcanic scree.
