On trunks and branches of Alnus, usually living trees. This material has spores 15 x 7 microns which show strong spiral line development on the walls, and according to Santesson matches the exsiccati specimen (Lojka, Lichenoth. Univ. Fasc., No. 2 1885) which is presumably the same Suksdorf Collection (No. 180) upon which Howard's name is based. The type specimen (FH) has mostly immature spores 10 x 5 microns, but a few of the largest and darkest ones have spiral lines, although not as prominent as in the present collection. The fruiting structures are likewise obviously immature on the type collection. No. 222. Substrate: corticolous.
