On rocks in the lower intertidal and upper subtidal zones, frequently partially buried in sand. Thalli 10-20 cm. high, deep red to purplish black in colour. The branches cylindrical or slightly flattened, up to 1 mm. in diameter, and several times dichotomously branched. Substrate: rock.
